The story takes place in Tokyo. As a member of a secret organization, the protagonist encounters an unknown creature—a Digimon—and gets caught in a mysterious explosion. When they come to, the world has reverted to eight years ago. The past and future, the human world and the alien world, humans and Digimon—disparate elements intertwine into a grand tale of bonds and conflict.
